Founded in 1969, the IWSC has a long history promoting quality and excellence amongst the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs. Awards are given based on a points system, tasted blind in selected categories and judged by an expert panel. In addition to this a technical analysis is carried out. This unique combination of detailed analysis and judging means that gaining an IWSC award is an exceptional achievement.

His rating system employs a 50-100 point quality scale as he believes it gives more flexibility and the ability to judge a wine without inflating the rating. He says he would always prefer to underrate a wine's quality than to overrate it.
